Service Overview:
Blastocyst culture is an advanced IVF technique where embryos are allowed to grow in the lab for 5 to 6 days (instead of the usual 2–3 days) until they reach the blastocyst stage, which is a more developed and implantation-ready form of the embryo.

Transferring a blastocyst increases the chances of successful implantation and pregnancy because it mimics the natural timing of embryo entry into the uterus.

Why is Blastocyst Culture Done?
Dr. Deepti Nitin Gupta may recommend blastocyst culture to:

  • Select the strongest, healthiest embryos for transfer

  • Improve success rates in IVF and ICSI cycles

  • Increase chances of pregnancy in couples with repeated IVF failure

  • Reduce the number of embryos transferred while maintaining high success (thus lowering chances of twins/triplets)

  • Allow better embryo grading and genetic testing (PGT) before transfer

What is a Blastocyst?
A blastocyst is an embryo that has developed for about 5 days after fertilization. At this stage, it has:

  • A fluid-filled cavity

  • A well-defined inner cell mass (which will become the baby)

  • An outer cell layer (which will form the placenta)

This stage indicates that the embryo has high implantation potential and is more likely to result in a successful pregnancy.

How is Blastocyst Culture Performed?

  1. Fertilization:
Eggs and sperm are combined via IVF or ICSI.

  2. Embryo Growth:
The embryos are carefully monitored in a specialized lab environment for 5–6 days.

  3. Blastocyst Selection:
Only the best-quality blastocysts are chosen for transfer or freezing.

  4. Embryo Transfer or Freezing:
One or two blastocysts are transferred into the uterus. Remaining healthy blastocysts may be frozen for future use.

Benefits of Blastocyst Culture:

  • Higher implantation and pregnancy rates

  • More natural timing of embryo transfer

  • Reduces the need to transfer multiple embryos

  • Better embryo selection and outcome prediction

  • Increases the success of Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycles as well
